So exactly what is colour management? Most modern images are shot digitally in RGB. The modern printing process, both litho and web uses the 4 colour CMYK process, which has a suprising limited colour gamut (the range of colours it can reproduce) when compared to RGB and what the human eye can see.

Vibrant colours such as oranges and acid greens tend to print dull and flat and often bear scant resemblence to the original image. Another contributing factor is that your computer screen displays in RGB gamut which displays a far greater range of colours than CMYK can achieve, increasing the likelihood of a disappointing reproduction at final print stage.
